Manipulation is defined as
behaviour that influences someone or controls something in a cleaver or
dishonest way, to influence or manage shrewdly or deviously, to tamper with or
falsify for personal gain. When I
manipulate, I "influence, manage, use, or control" things, people and
situations to my "advantage in an artful or indirect" manner. I "handle".
I can manipulate you in such a manner, that it is clear to you, the "manipulatee" that I am manipulating you; and if you are not capable of escaping my influence then you comply and are manipulated. I can manipulate you in such a manner, that you are not even aware that the manipulation is occurring. I can manipulate you, by giving you the impression that I am moving you to a certain position against your will, causing you to revolt, taking a different position and therefore ending up where I wanted you. I use many other manipulative techniques which I cannot reveal for "I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you". Let it be very clear though, that I am able to manipulate, by doing it clearly, by doing it secretly, by screaming that I am not doing it, in whichever manner - but I am capable of manipulating you.
Recently I have witnessed from the internet sidelines, as various actions between variously heinously and not so heinously aggrieved parties, accusers and defendants, injured and non injured parties, have played out to the Kenyan public. These actions have involved various scenarios, where information and misinformation has been used to influence, manage and control situations.
The different opposing parties have, filed complaints with the police, written articles, given headline media interviews, ranted on blogs, trended on twitter, refused to report, or any such combination of actions that suited their purpose. They have placated, insulted, defended, counter accused, denied, kept mum with the aim of each thrust and parry, being vindication and or exoneration.
It does not happen all at once, but slowly slowly catchee monkey. The outcome, to turn the private and public tides, be it angst and indignation or joy and hilarity to their favour. To cast doubt on any deemed aspersions flung their way. To change opinions and actions. By dint and effort to shout, or grow the shout to the loudest! Yes, it is true. And we all know it. We all have examples. He who shouts the loudest is the truest! ISN'T IT? SHOUTING THE LOUDEST MAKES ME THE TRUEST!!
We are manipulated as we manipulate too. Are we all manipulators?
